There is a lot of exposition in this episode, but I'm trying to set up the premise and setting of the story in just four panels.
The red dwarf is Barnard's Star, just under six light years from the Sol system.

Episode 1: Invasion! Near the edge of the galaxy, between the Sagittarius and Perseus arms, is the Orion Spur. In this minor spur is an even more minor red dwarf system. This system has one habitable planet with few natural resources.
Those who live there call the planet "Rock". It is far enough from the major bastions of civilization that the Empire, the Hive, the Federation and the Syndicate have no interest in exploiting it. It is not near any resource centers, so it has no commercial value. Nor is it located between any of the major civilizations, so it has no military value.
Rock's main attraction is that it is ignored by the galaxy at large. It is home to misfits, outcasts and the dregs of society. Rock has recently been discovered by the inhabitants of Earth. A shipload of Humans has just arrived, hoping that the more advanced species on Rock can provide quick solutions to all their problems.
Yeah, right. Good luck with that!
